Highly Cited Researchers 2024

Angel Rubio, Director of the Theory Department at the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD) and Managing Director of the Institute, has been recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher 2024 by Clarivate. Joining him on this prestigious list are Jie Shan and Kin Fai Mak from Cornell University, all three of them are Principal Investigators at the Max Planck - New York Center for Non-Equilibrium Quantum Phenomena. These researchers have demonstrated broad and lasting influence, with their publications ranking in the top 1% for citations over the past decade.

Clarivate’s 2024 ranking honors the most-cited researchers from around the world, reflecting the global impact and relevance of their work. This year’s list includes 6,636 researchers from 59 countries, covering 20 disciplines from physical and life sciences to economics and social sciences, with a special category for interdisciplinary research.

About the Researchers:

Angel Rubio is recognized in the cross-field category for his work on the theoretical modeling of electronic and structural properties of advanced materials, nanostructures, and molecular complexes. Rubio’s development of Quantum Electrodynamics Density Functional Theory (QEDFT) has provided new tools for investigating light-matter interactions. His research group is at the forefront of developing methods to control the dynamics of quantum many-body systems, including decoherence and dissipation.

Jie Shan and Kin Fai Mak, professors at Cornell University and principal investigators of the Max Planck New York Center in the second funding phase, are recognized for their groundbreaking research in the physics category. Their work focuses on the optical and electronic properties of atomically thin two-dimensional materials, such as graphene and MoS2, and their heterostructures. Their research group develops experimental techniques to explore and control electron behavior in these materials, advancing nanoscale electronics and optics. Both Kin Fai and Jie have recently spent extended research stays at the MPSD and have strong connections with the institute.

This year, Dmitri N. Basov (Cross-Field), Cory Dean (Physics) and James C. Hone (Physics and Materials Science), all from Columbia University, have also been recognized as Highly Cited Researchers. They play key roles at the Max Planck - New York Center for Non-Equilibrium Quantum Phenomena.

About the Ranking:

Clarivate Analytics has been honoring Highly Cited Researchers annually since 2001, recognizing scientists whose work has had a significant and lasting impact across various fields. The ranking is based on the frequency of citations of researchers' publications, as recorded in the Web of Science database, covering papers published and cited between January 2013 and December 2023.
